In non-car-but-also-car-related news; I've been walking to work for a while now so I decided to see if I could live without my own car for a while. I put a 3 month storage plate on the Mustang, and fully committed to walking to work. Even sub-let my parking pass at work.

So far I'm happy to report that it has been pretty easy to switch to walking (I'm only 2k from work, so less than 20 minutes walk). It has really served to separate the boring daily slog out from actual enjoyable driving time. It's also been totally tolerable in terms of inconvenience. On average there is about 1 day every two weeks where I have to borrow Lauren's car on a day she needed it too, requiring some mild scheduling. That's it.

I've concluded that only having 1 car is highly possible when it comes to the commuter, errand runner, grocery getter role of driving. This is great because it means I can buy something truly intolerable as a daily driver (Caterham?). However, I only made it to today (4 weeks in) without needing to put a temporary tag on the car for the weekend. I miss driving it, and have a couple mild errands to run this weekend so I caved. However, as long as I do the Temp permit route no more than once every month, I still save several hundred on insurance alone over this trial period.

I imagine in the winter when there won't be as much draw to go out for a drive on the weekend, I will save even more.

After having not driving it for one month... I drove it at lunch today and have concluded that it's really, really fast, has just about too much power (but not too much) but was still quite easy to handle and very rewarding to drive with great controls. I don't know that it felt this way when new, I think the modifications are doing it... but because I drove it every day for years while doing them I didn't notice the differences.

So, that's the best way to make your car feel faster. Walk everywhere for a month.
